Belly Dancing 2011

Meow Pussy Cats

I have been belly dancing for years and really love it. I had a bit of a long break and just recently went back into doing classes once a week again.  I love the Jingly hip scarves, the costumes, the make up, head-gear etc. This review has been put together with lots of different reviews that I have read. I hope you enjoy the review. If you have watched any of my eye make up tutorials some of the looks go really well on an Egyptian party nights.

Belly dance is the name commonly used by Western countries to apply to traditional Middle Eastern Dance.

Most of the movements in belly dancing involve isolating different parts of the body (hips, shoulders, chest, stomach etc.), similar to the isolations used in jazz ballet. In much of belly dance there is a focus upon the core muscles of the body producing the movement rather than the external muscles of the body. Egyptian and Lebanese belly dance in particular emphasise the need for movements to originate in the muscles of the back.

Important moves are:

Shiver or a shimmy these are done either with the hips or shoulders, the vibration is usually layered onto other movements. A shimmy can be done in different directions, up and down, side to side or a forward and back swinging motion. The hip shimmy is created by moving the knees past each other at speed.

Hip hits this is a movement of the hip out of the body. For instance if you are moving to the right, take the right leg out keep it straight and then stop bring the left leg to join the right but keep it bent and then with the left bent leg hip hit out.  But there are many ways of doing these hip hits.

Undulations – Fluid movements of the hips, chest or torso in a circular or rotating fashion. There are a wide variety of movements of this kind, of which the most well-known is probably the rotating movements of the chest forward, up, back and down to create the impression of riding a camel.

The costume worn in belly dancing is called Bedlah Arabic for Suit. The Bedlah consists of a fitted top or bra, with a fringe of beads and coins, a skirt or harem pants. The bra and skirt may some times be richly decorated with beads, sequins, coins etc.

The hip belt is a broad piece of fabric worn low on the hips. It may have straight edge, or may be curved or angled. The bra usually matches the belt and does not resemble lingerie. The classic harem pants are full and gathered at the ankle, but there are many variations. Sometimes pants and a sheer skirt are worn together. Skirts may be flowing creations made of multiple layers of one color sheer fabric chiffon.

For Raqs or Sharqi dancers  in Egypt It has been illegal  to have your mid riff uncovered since the 1950, or even to display excessive skin. It has become more common to wear  long figure hugging one piece gown strategically placed cut-outs filled in with sheer, flesh-coloured fabric. If bra and skirt or harem pants are worn then a sheer body stocking is to be worn which cover’s the mid riff.

The Egyptian traditional belly dance is usually done in bare feet, but these days people wear shoes and even high heels.

Khan Al Khalili is  the open market in Cairo and is the worlds most popular spot for Raqswear and attracts millions of people every year.

The different types of costumes that are worn.

In Lebanon there is no prohibition in showing your stomach so the Bedlah style is more common and some Lebanese belly dancers opt for the shirwal or harem pants with a bra. The veil is more widely used and usually matches the costume. And the trade mark of Lebanese belly dancers is to wear high heels.

Turkish belly dancers also wear Bedlah style costumes.  In the 80’s and 90’s a ‘stripperesque’ costume style developed, with skirts designed to display both legs up to the hip, and plunging bras. Such styles still exist in some venues. There are many Turkish belly dancers that wear very moderate costumes.

harem pants

American style includes a headband with a fringe, harem pants or skirt rather than tight lycra. Coins and metalwork are used to decorate the bra.

For the folkloric and baladi dances, a full-length beledi dress or galabeyah is worn, with or without cutouts.

A typical American Tribal style costume has voluminous pants covered with one or more skirts and belts. The top is usually a coin bra with pieces hanging from it, and dancers wear flowers, headbands, metal headdresses, and other folkoric-inspired pieces in their hair. They also often wear bindis and sport large tattoos that travel around the hip and belly area.

Tribal fusion costumes are limited only by the imagination and reflect the styles being fused.

I have just recently bought a dvd which I have found very useful. If you attend classes and just want a one to one and learn how to do the moves then this is a good buy. Leila of Egypt will teach the moves in three sections. Section one movements, undulations and shimmies. Section two you will learn the Egyptian walk, moving circles and moving shimmies. Section three you can follow Leila as she does some sensual, energizing or relaxing belly dance routines. It is very easy to follow and this dvd is for beginners. So improve your fitness and increase confidence while mastering the fundamentals of Egyptian style belly dancing. Follow the twelve easy lessons from the full dance routines. I bought this from Amazon.

Zumba The Best Dance Work Out Ever

Meow Pussycats

You must have heard of this latest craze, it’s the best work out ever and has been around for over 10 years, thanks to Beto Perez.

Beto is the founder of this dance and he is from Colombia. He forgot the tapes one day for his fitness class and all he had was his own Latin, Salsa and Meringue tapes with him. So he rose to the challenge and impovised his class with non-traditional aerobics. The class enjoyed this fitness routine so much he kept it, and it has since become very popular.  And so Zumba Fitness  was born and has become popular all over the world.

Well that is some history about Zumba, but the actual work out from my experience is really good. I love to dance so this is an excellent way to exercise. The hypnotic rhythm  just makes you to carry on dancing.  And Beto is right, you have to feel the music to be able to move to it.  Zumba is a combination of Salsa, Meringue, Columbia, Reagaton, hip hop and much more.
You don’t have to be a dancer to do Zumba as the work-outs have been created from basic’s, advanced and power. So start at the beginning and work your way up to a healthy body.

Go to the Zumba link and check it out.  www.zumbafitness.co.uk
You want to feel and look good don’t ya?  Well go ahead and do a little Zumba!

Check out the  Dance Wrist-Sweatbands. Great for Zumba, Bokwa, belly dancing and keep fit. Ditch the towel. A Great accessory to your dance routines.
